Answer: The welsh Not also known as the welsh note is a small piece of wood with a piece of string tied to it, making some kind of necklace. The piece of wood would often have the welsh not initials engraved into it (WN).
The welsh not was brought into schools all over Wales in order to prevent/discourage children from speaking any welsh and to make them speak English, as English was seen as the 'better' language for the children to learn in. Children were told that they had to speak in English only, because in the nineteenth century it was told that English should be spoken throughout the British empire.
Children in Wales spoke welsh inside and out side of schools so when the welsh not came into schools it was very difficult for the children to understand, learn and speak in English because to them English was a foreign language and all their teachers spoke to them in English.
