Question: Compare and contrast the use of video in the work of two artists.
1) Bill Viola - Ocean Without a Shore - Venice Biennale, 2007
2) Tony Oursler- Pain - 1995
Answer: “…a lot of my work deals with questions like this, of giving birth, death, and human transition.” Bill viola is highly considered one of today’s most important contemporary artists. He gained recognition with his graphic exploration of life, death (and what lies between) in, ‘Nantes triptych (1992)’ his stage re-enactments of ancient biblical stories, and Renaissance painting, in ‘emergence (2002)’ and most famously for his use of extreme slow motion and high definition cameras, which makes his videos appear like ‘moving paintings’. I personally view Viola as part artist, part director. He uses video to document a performance often staged perfectly in every way, in which he then plays back as a piece of art to his audience.
Another artist I feel shares similarities and also many differences with his use of video, is the American born conceptual artist, Tony Oursle...(short extract)
