Answer: Science provides children with many opportunities to develop skills such as observation, researching, exploration, data handling and investigating. All the previously mentioned are important within the National Curriculum for science. However, it is the skill of ‘investigation’ in particular which carries greater weighting in key stages one and two. As cited in Sherrington (1993, p.55) Feasey highlights “Fifty percent of primary science should be devoted to the development of Attainment Target 1 (Sc1) which, logically, means that half of the time allocated to science or activities should be investigations”. Good teachers will ensure that children are provided with extensive opportunities to develop their Sc1 skills.
