Answer: As Headington (2000) notes “Assessment refers to the work which teachers undertake to determine the learning and the learning needs of pupils”. Assessment is a vital part of learning. Teachers need to know what children know in order to ensure that they are taught effectively. Gipps (1996) reiterates this idea and states “Assessment does not stand outside teaching and learning but stands in dynamic interaction with it”. Assessment can be used to identify strengths and weaknesses of a child. Through analysing the information gathered appropriate targets can then be set in order to ensure progression. English in the national curriculum is made up of three components: speaking and listening, reading and writing.
