Question: Why can it be difficult to decide whether or not a person is an informal carer and does it matter? Base your answer on the case of someone you know, or have read about.
Answer: There are between six and seven million people in the UK who provide extra help to family, friends or neighbours that are elderly or suffering from a mental or physical illness.
It is important to recognise these carers, as they need support. There is a vast array of support that could be made available to them, which include training and information, financial help, contact with other carers, meal deliveries and an extra pair of hands to give them a break.
If this support structure was in place, it would ideally, help pre-empt and diffuse stressful situations. It could also highlight, and therefore tackle, issues of neglect and cruelty.
To help recognise who is and who isn’t an informal carer we need to have a definition that we can refer to-
