Answer: In Bowlby’s theory, he proposed that attachment was important for survival. And both the caregiver/adults and the infant are innately programmed to form attachments and create a reciprocal bond between themselves for survival and to respond in looking after the infant. This is because the genes that are most useful for survival and reproduction will be naturally selected to be passed down the generations.
He also proposed the ‘Critical Period’ which establishes that during a period of time, if the development of attachment and other essential parts like growth (e.g. embryo growth) does not happen or is damaged, then this may not take place at all or will be permanently affected. Bowlby suggested if an infant does not form an attachment within the first 2 □(1/2) years, that is will not be possible thereafter.
