Question: Describe and Evaluate Theories and Research on the Effects of Maternal Deprivation.
Answer: The definition of the term maternal deprivation according to John Bowlby (1951) is the separation or loss of the mother as well as failure to develop an attachment. From a psychological perspective it is the disruption of the attachment between infant and primary caregiver.
In this essay I intend to evaluate theories and research on the effects of maternal deprivation. I shall be using Bowlby’s 44 Thieves Study (Bowlby, 1944)’as an example of psychological research into maternal deprivation and to identify criticisms of his theories.
