Question: Outline and assess the extent to which trade union power has been eroded since 1979.

Answer: Trade unions have existed in Britain for over two hundred years. In the 19th century, trade unions were outlawed for being anti-competitive but by the early 20th century there were two million trade union members and this rose to a peak of over thirteen million in 1979. From this point onwards however there has been a dramatic fall in the size of the membership and political influence of trade unions....(short extract)
