Answer: The number of protons in a nucleus (or nuclide) is called the atomic number, Z.
The total number of nucleons is called the atomic mass number or mass number, A.
This name is used since the mass of a nucleus is very closely A times the mass of one nucleon. For example, a nuclide with 7 protons and 8 neutrons thus has Z = 7 and A = 15. The neutron number N is N = A – Z.
Nuclei that contain the same number of protons but a different
number of neutrons are known as isotopes....(short extract)
