Question: Critically assess the claim that myth can successfully be used to express the human understanding of God.
Answer: Many people think that using myth is a good way to successfully express the human understanding of God. Myth is a way to make positive truth claims about God and these are usually through the use of stories. Rudolph Bultmann is a philosopher who agree that myth is a good way to successfully express the human understanding of God. Bultmann holds the belief that the bible is not literal and just contains stories that help us to understand God. Bultmann argued that we should demythologise stories so we can separate the truth from the myth. Doing this would allow us to find true meaning in these myths which would in turn make religious language meaningful. One example Bultmann gave was Jesus walking on water. He argued that after this is demythologised it has the meaning of helping others through difficult times.
