Answer: Dyslexia is subdivided into two types, developmental dyslexia and acquired dyslexia, the former is a congenital condition, the latter a condition acquired through neurological damage. This essay will argue that developmental dyslexia can be explained as a predominantly cognitive deficit in comparison to biological and behavioural explanations. Developmental and acquired dyslexia might seem discrete types however it is widely recognized that both lend useful opportunities in studying the other, generally recognizing the same symptoms as a basis for diagnosis. Debates as to degrees of abnormality go on, each stance looks for standards to measure or define by. Statistical measurements, perceived disabilities, cultural norms and personal distress are all used however it is apparent that no single method can adequately define dyslexia.
