Musical and Sonic Mistakes
Answer: The first song I'm going to analyse is Miley Cyrus's cover of Smells Like Teen Spirit by Nirvana. Her band is perfectly competent - they've got the intro down, and the gunshot drums. The only thing that is worst about the band is when the guitar comes into to play the rhythm. The fault is entirely Cyrus's, and the cover really goes off the rails in the final verse. And it's not that she's not a good singer because plenty of people with melodic voices make the cover good or great singers. Cyrus tried to make her singing with musical equivalent of overacting, presumably because as a teen pop star she is used to that. She sounds like someone who legitimately likes the song, but as a result of culture and training, she misses the understanding of the menace, which gives the verse dynamics in contrast to the immense chorus. She casually blows off the entire second verse of the song.
