Answer: There is little doubt that patterns of employment have changed significantly since the mid
1970’s from a position of relative standardisation to one of increasing flexibility in terms of the setting, timing and nature of work. Some believe that such changes have served to enrich the lives of many, eroding the constraints of traditional employment and work
structures and providing an alternative framework within which a meaningful work life
balance can be achieved (Jupp, 1998). For others, the move towards increased flexibility in
all aspects of the employment system has more to do with increasing productivity,
performance and competition in the global market economy, than it has with enhancing the
