Question: Evaluate the notion that Local Government has effectively been superseded by the Central UK state.
Answer: Few would argue that the end of the end of the Second World War was a significant time for a number of reasons. Not least was the popular belief that the People’s War had accomplished more than just the overthrow of fascism, it had paved the way towards creating a better and more equal society in which the state’s commitment to managing the economy and providing welfare services, constituted a political consensus (Marshall, 1965:65). Central to the post-war reconstruction and the creation of the British welfare regime were the main proposals enshrined within the Beveridge Report of 1942.
