Question: Identify the various sources of law in UK and describe their origins, nature and characteristics.
Answer: Law itself is hard to define. Generally, it is thought to be a system of rules recognised by a country of community to regulate the actions of its members. Since the Norman Request of 1066, the sources of law in the UK have evolved vastly from common law (and through it equity) to legislation and delegated legislations and looks further to the current ambiguities of adhering to UK’s obligations to EU and international law. Underlying these are also the equivocal position of parliamentary conventions and general customs existing from ‘time immemorial’ as sources of modern law. This essay will be a discussion of the various key modern sources of law.
