Question: TMA 01 How might developing cultural competence improve mental health services?
Answer: In this TMA I shall outline how training, education and service user/provider involvement in cultural competence might improve mental health services. I shall also outline the challenges that such an approach may meet. So, where shall we begin?
Perhaps the first step to improving mental health services, by developing cultural competence, is for services to ask themselves such pertinent questions as: Do we have an existing cultural competence in our services? What is our current policy around such matters? Do we have an appropriate training program in place? What are the current national guidelines, if any? Do we involve service users effectively? These are all challenging questions. However, before we provide any answers we need to define what is meant by cultural competence.
