Question: TMA 01 How might developing cultural competence improve mental health services?
Answer: Before introducing cultural competence it is important to explain what both culture and competence mean individually. There are many definitions on the internet but the basic common definitions of what I understand these to be are as follows. Culture refers to common patterns of human behaviours within racial, religious and social groups to name but a few. It refers to the group’s customs, values, beliefs, the language they use and the way they communicate with each other. Each group is different within these categories. Keeping in reference to the topic, competence refers to being able to function effectively when presented with the needs of the individuals within these groups.
