Question: Discuss the impact and implications of the ‘hierarchy of evidence’ for mental health research.
Answer: The hierarchy of evidence regarding mental health research is a hierarchy based around power. At the top of the hierarchy is research practices and knowledge constructed through mainly experimental methods of study, often based around the notion of cause and effect, controlled experiments and research methods such as randomised control trials (page 15, K272 Module 2, 2004 gives an example of a small scale randomised control trial looking at the effectiveness of CBT for individuals with schizophrenia). The top of the hierarchy is therefore composed largely of quantitative, medical knowledge, constructed by practitioners and ‘professional’ people considered to have expert knowledge about a subject....(short extract)
