Question: WOMEN IN THE BOARDROOM: AN INVESTIGATION INTO THE GLASS CEILING, DISSERTATION, BA BUSINESS STUDIES (HONOURS).

Answer: Over the past decade, there has been an increased awareness of issues facing women in the workplace. This study aims to investigate the difficulties women find in achieving promotion in the workplace. The views, beliefs and opinions of both male and female Branch Managers in a leading retail organisation, RetailCo were examined. It was investigated if there was a glass ceiling in RetailCo, what the main factors were that prevented women gain promotion in RetailCo, what strategies RetailCo could undertake to help women progress into senior management and also what the female employees of RetailCo could undertake themselves to help them proceed into senior management.

This study used both interviews and questionnaires for its main body of research. The research highlighted that RetailCo has a strong stereotypically male culture that may be impeding women’s advancement.....(short extract)
