Question: Laboratory Report Gel Electrophoresis: the separation of proteins.
Answer: Introduction:
SDS-PAGE (sodium dodecyl sulphate - polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis) is a process that makes us able to separate denatured proteins by their size. As we are using unfolded and same-charged proteins, it is expected that smaller proteins move more quickly because of the less resistance in their path and are expected to accumulate more at the bottom of the gel. (In comparison with larger proteins)
Methodology:
Students had to work in pairs and each four of us (2 pairs), had one gel to work on. The first task was to assemble the gel, as the protein samples had already been prepared (denatured) by boiling them in a buffer that contained SDS (for denaturing the protein) and beta-mercaptoethanol (also for denaturing the protein). In order to assemble the gel, we had to place the short plate and dry spacer plate in the casting frame (the short plate went in front with the...(short extract)
