Answer: The Cinchona alkaloids are a group of 35 bases found in Cinchona and Remijia species. The principal Cinchona alkaloids, Quinine, Quinidine, Cinchonine, Cinchonidine are termed the Quinoline alkaloids (Gatti et al., 2004). Although cultivated commercially all over the world the Cinchona and Remijia species are indigenous to the Andes. Typically bark contains 7-12% total alkaloids of which Quinine accounts for 70-90%, Cinchonidine 1-3%, and Quinidine up to 1% (McCalley, 2002).

Cinchona alkaloids have many uses but Quinine is particularly important. Quinine is predominantly added to carbonated drinks and used as foodstuffs for its bitter taste which can increase appetite and digestive juices....(short extract)
