Answer: Opposition to African-American civil rights was a constant throughout the period from 1865-1992, though the strength of this opposition fluctuated noticeably in this span of time. There was not only opposition amongst the general population, but opposition to civil rights was also implemented in legislature passed by the Federal Government and laws made by the Supreme Court.
The resentment the FG held towards AACR shows that there was strong resistance to AA gaining equal rights. Though some presidents saw significant progress in regard to civil rights, such as Johnson, whose administration saw the appointment of the first AA, Thurgood Marshall, to the Supreme Court and more significantly the passing of the 1964 CR bill.
