Question: How far do you agree with the view that the origins of the cold war in 1945 and 1946 owed much too ideological difference and little to personalities and conflicting national interests? (30 Marks)

Answer: The cold war was evidently a period of divergence and hostility between the USA, the West and the soviet union with seeds of hostility arriving from the end of WW2.The fragments within ideologies proved to be a focal point which anticipated the cold war during 1945-1946.Both the USA and the Soviet union were virtually polar opposites on how political regimes should be implemented resulting in the unlikely hood of both communist and capitalist regimes co-existing. Both the personalities of the leaders and national interests were definitive for the cold war resulting in the lack of negotiation and the Soviet Union seeking for expansion and protection whilst the USA emphasised upon containment. Ultimately such reasons are a matter of debate to whether contributing or not to the division between the super powers.
