Question: ‘German aggression was responsible for the outbreak of a general European war in August 1914.’ How far do you agree with this judgement? Grade A 70%
Answer: It is clear that German aggression contributed greatly to the outbreak of a general European war in August 1914. Both sources 1 and 2 have supportive evidence to this effect, as they cite arguments from historians such as Fischer and A.J.P Taylor. Source 3 contains suggestions of the shared guilt theory, however the arguments portrayed here are heavily outweighed by those made in Source’s 1 and 2, and indeed by key historical events, such as the war council meeting and the July crisis, both of which point towards German aggression being responsible.
Firstly, there is evidence that Germany had been preparing for war as early as “1904”, as mentioned in source 2. This reference, in source 1, to “a plan for an aggressive war…Germany would have to fight Russia and France simultaneously” is of course a reference to the Schlieffen plan.
