Answer: This assignment will discuss person centred care and how it can improve practice when working with people with dementia. It will also explore how a person centred approach can affect a person with dementia.
Sam Murphy OU (2010) identified that a Department of Health review in 2009 claimed that as many as 144,000 people with dementia were taking antipsychotic drugs unnecessarily, which caused around 1,800 deaths and as many strokes.
What is a Person Centred Approach
Sam Murphy (OU2010) discussed Tom Kitwood, a lecturer in the mid 80’s who pioneered person-centred care. Tom Kitwood advocated that a person should be viewed as a whole, considering all the needs of a person, including psychological, spiritual, physical and social needs.
