Question: Why has obesity become such a significant public health problem in the UK recently?
Answer: This is an essay which I’m writing in order to explain my views on why obesity is such a significant health problem in the UK today.
Obesity is simply defined as ‘the accumulation of excess fat in the body and this arises as a result of an imbalance between energy expenditure and energy intake’. (www.dwp.co.uk). What this simply means is when a person is carrying too much body fat for their age, height and sex. If a person’s BMI (body mass index) is higher than 30 per cent then that person is commonly known as obese. It’s no wonder people in Britain are getting fatter. It’s just too easy to get hold of unhealthy food. School canteens are filled to the brim with vending machines filled with excessive calories and saturated fats. Our television screens are running 24 hours a day with adverts selling McDonalds...(short extract)
