Answer: It has been argued that the practise of child abuse can be traced back to the beginnings of human history. Sadly this distinct phenomenon has only been recognised within the last century and it is essential for children to be protected against it. During these dark ages exploitation of children was the norm being merely a tragic, if only an inadvertent consequence of life.
The Waifs and Strays’ Society was founded by Edward de Montjoie Rudolf (1852-1933) a civil servant working in the St Anne’s Parish of South Lambeth London in 1881. This society is recognised as the first registered in the United Kingdom closely followed by Societies for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children set up in Liverpool in 1883 and London in 1884.
