Question: In the Ruth and Adam case in unit 21, to what extent did Ruth's actions break with good practise in terms of accountability and confidentiality? What ought she to have done and what additional supports.
Answer: Ruth works in a local after-school club and is surrounded by children of different ages. One of the children, a boy called Adam can be boisterous and very active. Ruth notices that Adam has some bruises on his arm and becomes concerned. She faces many dilemmas, which she probably never encountered before, so therefore does not deal with them appropriately.
Ruth broke Adams confidentiality by discussing the case with her husband, Mark, when she finished work. Although it is a good idea to have a second opinion when in doubt, it might have been better to ask someone who was experienced in these situations, hypothetically without saying any names.
