Question: Geography controlled assessment - An investigation into changes in the long profile of the River Holford
Aim:
To investigate the River Holford’s key characteristics, such as the long profile of the river channel, how this impacts upon changes in both processes and the river’s physical features themselves.
Objectives:
· What are the key characteristics of the river Holford and why are they like this?
· How does the river channel along the long profile change?
· How does the flow of water in the channel alter with changes in the long profile?
· Is there a link between the characteristics of the long profile and channel form and water flow?
· How does the velocity of the water itself change as you go downstream and is it affected by the long profile of the river?
Answer: Location of the River Holford:
The river Holford is in the south west of England, Somerset, bordering the Bristol Channel, in an area of land known as the Quantock hills, these are classified as an area of outstanding natural beauty and mostly consist of woodland and moorland. They therefore are quite heavily populated by rivers. The rivers source is at ‘Lady’s fountain spring, Frog Combe’ the source is approximately 250m above sea level. The river flows for 4.7 miles north and its mouth is at the Bristol Channel.

Geographical setting:
The Quantocks are mostly on Devonian quartzite which is an impermeable rock, this therefore means that, especially at the source, the water doesn’t drain very easily therefore allowing rivers to form fairly easily. The river Holford however travels over th...(short extract)
