Answer: Guam was ceded to the United States by Spain in 1898. It was captured by the Japanese in 1941 and retaken by the United States three years later.
The location of Guam is Oceania. It is an island in the North Pacific Ocean, about three-quarters of the way from Hawaii to the Philippines (3,700 miles west-southwest of Honolulu, 1,500 miles east of Manila), and 1,500 miles south-southwest of Tokyo, 2,100 miles southwest of Hong Kong and 3,100 miles north-northwest of Sydney. Guam is the largest and southernmost island in the Mariana Archipelago and is considered one of the most strategically important U.S. bases in the Pacific....(short extract)
