Answer: The fall of the Weimar state and the rise to power of the Nazis in the early 1930s was not a historically inevitable event, but was instead caused by a combination of the Weimar government’s inefficiency, Nazi successes and the economic depression of the late 1920s and early 1930s. Whilst the introduction of some form of authoritarian government was highly likely under the circumstances, owing to the positions of power held by many opponents of the Republic, Hitler’s rise to power was unexpected and was caused ultimately by conservative elites who handed him the Chancellorship when this was unnecessary....(short extract)
