Question: Creative Critical Response to Trevor Nunn’s adaptation of Shakespeare’s ‘Twelfth Night’

Answer: Trevor Nunn’s adaptation of Shakespeare’s ‘Twelfth Night’ is a film that elaborates themes beautifully due to the excellent casting, setting, costumes and lighting.
The nautical setting of the first scene, a liberty unique to the film, gives the twins Viola and Sebastian a performer’s background making Viola’s disguise credible. Bringing the play into 19th century Central Europe seems to have no particular effect and while Shakespeare’s language is mostly intact, it has been simplified wining the approval of modern audiences, but would be rejected by Elizabethans, used to Shakespeare’s blank verse.
Imogen Stubbs [Viola] brings sincerity and an air of joie de vivre to her character, though I feel she is not physicality masculine enough to be convincing as Sebastian’s. Nigel Hawthorne [Malvolio] successfully makes his character one of derision, especially in the ...(short extract)
