Question: What motivates children to write? Understanding how to support children to become independent writers
Answer: The purpose of this research is to gain an understanding into what motivates children from within to become willing writers. The research took an interpretivist approach and was conducted within a class of thirty five children; encompassing time spent in two academic years (years two and three).
Data was collected within the literacy hour, under the guidance of two class teachers. Data was in the form of log/ diary/ journal, participant and non-participant observations, taped transcript and semi-structured interviews with both adults and children.
Grounded theory was subsequently used to analyse the data, with pieces of data unitised and initial categories formed. This allowed pertinent issues and concerns to be summarised which then informed the future areas of focus.
