Question: Comparing and contrast the plays Death and the Maiden by Ariel Dorfman and Decadence by Steven Berkoff.
Answer: For Death and the Maiden we were asked to set the staging for the play and as most of the play takes place in the main living area of Paulina and Gerardo’s home and we had to show the balcony, front door and windows easily for the audience to see it was best to have it performed in the proscenium stage, where the audience only sits on one side of the stage, in front. When my group and I designed our stage we decided to keep it simple so that the audience didn’t get distracted from the scenes and the importance of the message behind the play by props in the background. We were also asked to create staging for the last scene which takes place at the theatre, this scene is very clever as the original staging has mirrors that are facing the audience and have Paulina, Roberto and Gerardo in the audience and by having the mirror’s the audience are able to see them through the reflection...(short extract)
