Question: Do animals have emotional lives? Evaluate how recent studies have advanced our understanding of this area.
Answer: There are strong concerns regarding whether any other animals other than humans can feel emotions (Ekman 1998). However, upon influential research, our understanding into the area of animal emotions has undeniably advanced, with research suggesting that it is more than likely that animals are capable and do exhibit to live emotional lives. This essay will therefore explore and assess the main research indicative of this conclusion; research including evidence of animal’s ability to discriminate both behaviourally and psychologically between human facial expressions, animal’s ability to express facial emotions themselves, their capability of an empathetic process, in addition to the animal’s capacity to express depressive emotions.
