Question: TMA 05 Evaluate the claim that social science investigations of elections and voting help to enact participation in political processes.
Answer: Voting in an election is an ‘individualistic’ form of ‘participation’ and one of the largest rituals in the modern world. However some people vote and others do not, and the number of people that do vote can be referred to as ‘voter turnout’. Voter turnout and political participation forms part of social science research that uses methodologies, surveys and interviews to generate different theories and to make sense of elections. However not all theories or explanations provide a comprehensive account of voter turnout and voting behaviour. This essay will therefore evaluate such theories as to whether they are valid and credible when explaining whether social science helps to enact political participation.
