Answer: This essay will define key concepts such as the division of labour, structure, agency and power in the context of ‘work and leisure’. Case studies on shadow work and leisure will be used as examples to support my understandings. In doing so the body of this essay will firstly identify similarities between the ‘gendered’ and ‘social’ or ‘class’ division of labour. As the essay develops further, it will provide a different view of ideas held by both theories.
The ‘division of labour’ in a sense commonly refers to the allocation and distribution of work among different types and groups of people in society. ‘Agency’ can be understood as the ability to exert free choice and is therefore associated with values of individuality, choice, and freedom. ‘Structures’, can be understood by which age, class, gender, ethnicity and nationality, determine how differently...(short extract)
