Answer: The role of power in consumer society can be seen in towns and cities across the UK in many forms, one of which is that of supermarkets. In the case of supermarkets the word power refers to their influence, control and domination over their customers, rivals and workers. There are two strong arguments as to whether supermarkets give or take from our communities and it is these arguments that I will be discussing in this assignment including the concepts of zero sum and positive sums games, and the seduced and repressed in relation to these arguments.
There are numerous supermarkets in the UK today but there are four that dominate the market. These are known as The Big Four and are made up of Tesco, Sainsbury, Asda and Morrisons.
