Question: How are “race” and “ethnicity” linked to place in the formation of identities? Describe some examples of how these identities might be changing over time.
Answer: In this essay, I will explore the meaning of place in relation to identity. I will give examples and discuss how "race", "ethnicity" and "place" combine in forming identities, applying these concepts, to social changes in the UK over the period 1945-2005, emphasising the dynamic process of identity formation.
What defines a place? How big is it? “Place” can be broken down into diminishing areas of geography e.g. world, continent, nation, and region. “Place” can be a period in history, combining with location to give a more precise reference point. This becomes important when looking at the relation between "place" and identity because in order to study the dynamic process of identity formation at least two points of reference are necessary between which we would investigate changes and effects.
