Question: A critical evaluation in relation to contemporary theoretical and social perspectives on children and young people.
Answer: The scope of this early study is based on a scenario highlighting the situation of a young 13-year-old male child, named Liam, whose environmental circumstances appear to directly affect his cognitive and social development. The scenario contains various aspects such as single parenting, poor housing, education and health, all relating to a social exclusion environment and the subsequent reaction impacting the child’s development. Liam’s situation appears to degrade after his mother takes on employment, which involves her working during the night. As a consequence of less supervision Liam’s behaviour pattern changes to a point where he begins smoking, drinking and playing truant from school.
