Question: What are the risk factors that lead some children to become bullies and others to adopt bullying strategies; evaluate school, classroom and individual interventions?

Answer: There is evidence to support that children show ‘risk factors’ that can predispose bullying or victim behaviour. The stereotypical bully and portrayed in the media as tall, strong, academically inept, seeking power and vice versa for victims is inaccurate. As research proves that bullies and victims originate from all types of families regardless of socio-economic status and cultural background (Elliot et al 2002; Rigby, 2002; Thompson et al. 2002).
Classification and subgroups
Bullies are classified into three categorise (Tattum et al 2003)
Aggressive bullies, who direct aggression towards children, teachers and parents, they are often involved in other forms of anti-social behaviour and are not anxious, insecure or friendless unlike their victims.
Anxious bullies who share many victim traits i.e. low self-esteem, insecure, disturbed etc.
