Humans are adapted to be able to handle some variations in annual weather cycles however weather changes above this limit can cause severe health issues. As temperature rises, the days get hotter and heat waves occur more frequently and for much longer. Heat waves occur when the temperature rises higher than average for a very long period of time. The excessive heat is more likely to affect the population near the top of the northern hemisphere as those countries generally have lower average temperatures compared to the southern hemisphere and therefore would be less prepared to cope with the excessive heat. In March 2012 NOAA’s National Climate Data Center reported that over 700 records of high temperatures were broken across the United States.[1] Unusual temperature rises of above 26 degrees Celsius were seen in Chicago for five consecutive days.[2] This s...(short extract)
