Question: Chemistry Extended Experimental Investigation EEI Year 11-12
Graded A
Abstract:
The effect of water distillation on heat liberated from the combustion of ethanol in a calorimeter was measured in order to investigate the following hypothesis:
That heat energy produced from the combustion of ethanol will be reduced in direct proportion to the percentage of water present due to the latent heat of vaporisation (entropy increase) effect of the water.

Answer: This extended experimental investigation covers the effect of water when mixed with ethanol on the heat that is produced when combusted. It provides a hypothesis that states that heat will go down when water content increases and shows the results of the experiment and an explanation for the results as improvements and recommendations for the experiment. The experiment was conducted with two calorimeters. The first calorimeter used pure ethanol and was comprised of a glass beaker over a spirit burner. Design two was comprised of a copper surrounded by insulation and alfoil to maximise amount of heat that could be collected and tested with different mixtures of ethanol. The mixtures used were pure ethanol, two millilitres water and a hundred millilitres ethanol, five millilitres water and a hundred millilitres ethanol and ten millilitre millilitres water and a hundred millilitres ethanol....(short extract)
