Answer: One way molecules and ions move into a out of cells is through the process of diffusion. Diffusion is the net movement of particles from an area of high concentration to an area of low concentration in which molecules/ions move down a concentration gradient, therefore it his a passive process and requires no energy. The rate of diffusion can be affected by several different factors, one being the concentration gradient, the higher it is the faster the rate of diffusion. Another factor is the thickness of the exchange surface, the thinner the surface, the faster the diffusion rate as the particles have a shorter distance to travel. The surface area also affects the rate of diffusion, the larger the surface area the faster the diffusion rate, in addition to this, the temperature also affects the diffusion rate.
