AS level Philosophy and Ethics
Answer: David Hume suggested that the problem of evil and suffering is set to be the “rock of atheism” and poses a great challenge to the issue of God’s existence, especially questioning God’s omnibenevolent characteristics.
There are fundamentally two types of evil present in the world; natural evil- concerning problems in the natural world such as tsunamis, earthquakes and famines, of which humans cannot control and cannot be stopped, an example is the recent Typhoon Haiyan which affected around 3.6 million people; moral evil- are a result of human actions, such as murder, theft, torture, rape all which can be controlled and are usually intentional, the holocaust is a sad example of truly unnecessary evil in which survivors had then established “murdered [faith of] God”.
