Answer: The site for the Strawbale House is at the end of a residential, Victorian terrace off the Caledonian Road in Islington. It is a brownfield site and located next to an intercity railway line and on the edge of a conservation area. The footprint of the site is 20m deep on the North-South axis and 40m wide.
The intention behind the design was to provide a model of sustainable living in an urban setting and to construct it with materials that are easy to use and available to the non-specialist. The building is a response to the need for hybrid house/office spaces in the twenty-first century city.
Amongst other short listings, it has been awarded the RIBA Sustainability Award 2004 and the Civic Trust Award 2002. [AJ, Oct14th 99 p29]
