Question: Discuss the Arguments for and against the policy of Appeasement as carried out by British and French governments in the inter-war years.
Answer: Evidence of a policy of appeasement can be traced back to the 1919 Paris peace settlement however, the clearest evidence of the policy is to be found during the 1930`s. It was during this time that there was an acceptance of the growth of German power and territory as demonstrated by the appeasement policy followed by the British and French governments during German open rearmament (1935), the German occupation of the Rhineland (1936), the Anschluss with Austria (1938) and the Czech crisis (1938) Therefore this is the period that will be discussed.
The aim of the British and French policy of appeasement was to satisfy German grievances through negotiation and diplomacy rather than force whilst maintaining British and French interests and security.
