Answer: The scene specified is a soliloquy; one that acquiesces a monumental insight into Faustus’s mind; where Marlowe exploits language as a gateway to his feelings and emotions. Thus upon reading, an internal battle is revealed, as Faustus’s conscience combats his greed, a theme that persists throughout.
The paramount element this soliloquy reveals is Faustus’s mental struggle, e.g. when he claims how ‘something soundeth’(l.7) in his ears. This may symbolise his conscience, that his internal battle against his inherent goodness has actually become tangible, so much so that it can now be heard, hammering away in his mind. Another interpretation can be it is symbolising despair, his despair of redemption, of the fact that ‘god loves thee not’(l.10), an effect of the Calvinist theory popular at that time.
