Question: What if anything might the philosopher Aristotle have found of value in a seaside holiday.

Answer: A seaside holiday is many things to many people. It is essentially a time of leisure at the coast.
The seaside seems to give people the freedom to behave in an ‘out of the ordinary’ manner and the restrictions of everyday life fall away, ‘a place where people could throw off their inhibitions and evade the normal codes of conduct expected of their class and gender’(p132 Lucy Faire 2008). This idea of being free from life’s restrictions is also revered by Horace in his poem Sabine Farm: retreating from town, when he says’ We have no truck with crazy rules’ (p88 Reading 3.1- 2008). The Roman villa (often by the sea- a place of natural beauty) provided the ‘wealthy and educated’ ( p 67 Janet Huskinson-2008) Romans with a place of ‘peace and quiet’(p 67 Janet Huskinson-2008).
