An assessment of the use of language to convey different moods.
Answer: In this extract from her autobiographical novel “Hidden Lives”, Margaret Forster uses a variety of language devices to convey the changing mood as she realises that her education is to continue at the High School.
The mood changes can be separated into two main categories, which happen to be divided by the two paragraphs. These feelings are initially conveyed by Forsters’ word choice. Words like “dizzy”, “struggle”, “pitiful”, “anxious” and “tragic” all add to the atmosphere full of desperation, nerves and longing as she waits for the letter to arrive.....(short extract)
